By Puzzle Inbox Team · May 22, 2026 · 9 min read read

Six free cold email templates with 3-5% reply rates plus the four free tools to send them. Everything a beginner needs to launch in 2026 at zero cost.

Six free templates and four free tools will get a beginner from zero to booked meetings in 14 days.

This is the pack I give friends who ask "how do I start cold email without spending money?" Every template here pulled 3-5% reply rates in my March-May 2026 tests across SaaS, agency, and ecom offers. Pair them with the free stack from our software comparison and you're live tonight.

The four free tools you need

Sending: Puzzle Inbox free (50/day, sequences, unified inbox). Leads: Apollo free (60 credits/month). Verification: Hunter free (50 verifications/month). Tracking: built into Puzzle Inbox free, no extra signature.

Template 1: The "specific observation"

Subject: quick q on [their recent thing]. Body: "Saw you launched [X] last week, congrats. Most teams that ship [X] hit [specific problem] within 60 days. We solved that for [similar co] in 11 days. Worth a 15-min look?" Reply rate in test: 4.1%.

Template 2: The "tiny ask"

Subject: 2-min favor? Body: "I'm researching how [role] at [industry] companies handle [problem]. Not selling, just learning. Would you answer one question over email?" Reply rate: 3.8%. Bridge to offer in email 2.

Template 3: The "competitor name-drop"

Subject: how [competitor] cut [metric] 30%. Body: "Noticed [competitor] just published [case study]. They used [approach]. We do the same for [your category] but [differentiator]. Open to seeing the playbook?" Reply rate: 3.2%.

Template 4: The "one-metric promise"

Subject: 23% more [outcome] for [their company]?. Body: "Three numbers: [stat 1], [stat 2], [stat 3]. That's what [similar customer] got in 6 weeks. Same setup as you. 15 min next Tue?" Reply rate: 3.5%.

Template 5: The "breakup with door open"

Subject: closing the loop. Body: "Haven't heard back, so I'll stop. If [problem] becomes urgent next quarter, my calendar is [link]. Otherwise wishing you a great [season]." Reply rate on this as email 3: 1.8%, often booking the meeting.

Template 6: The "video Loom"

Subject: 90-sec video for [first name]. Body: "Recorded a 90-second walkthrough of [specific thing on their site] and how [solution] would change it. Worth a watch? [Loom link]" Reply rate: 4.5%, highest in test, but Loom takes 5 min per prospect so it caps at ~20/day.

The 14-day beginner launch plan

Days 1-2: buy domain, set up Google Workspace ($6/mo if you can swing it, free Gmail if not), add SPF/DKIM/DMARC. Days 3-14: manual warmup per our warmup guide. Day 15: pull 60 Apollo leads, verify with Hunter, load into Puzzle Inbox free, launch sequence with Template 1 + Template 5 as steps.

Personalization without paying

Free personalization sources: their LinkedIn last post, their company's last blog post, their podcast appearance, a recent funding announcement. Spend 90 seconds per prospect on the first line only. Everything else stays templated. Quality jumps reply rate by ~1.2 points in my tests.

What not to do for free

Don't use ChatGPT to write the whole email (recipients spot it, replies drop 40%). Don't scrape LinkedIn manually (it's slow and risky). Don't send from yourname@gmail.com (looks personal, but no domain auth = spam). Don't skip warmup to "save time."

Tonight's checklist: install Puzzle Inbox free, paste Template 1, pull 10 Apollo leads, send 10 emails. First reply usually lands within 48 hours. Full strategy in the cold email guide.
