Lemlist vs Reply.io: Video Personalization vs Multichannel Sales Engagement

Lemlist built its name on personalized images and Lemwarm. Reply.io went deep on multichannel with LinkedIn steps, phone tasks, and AI writing. We tested both for 45 days to see which books more meetings.

Two Very Different Bets on What Makes Cold Email Work

Lemlist and Reply.io both run cold email sequences. That's where the similarity ends. Lemlist made its reputation on personalized images and video thumbnails embedded in email, plus Lemwarm, their built-in warmup network. Reply.io built a multichannel sales engagement platform that layers LinkedIn automation, phone call tasks, WhatsApp steps, and AI sequence generation on top of standard email.

These are not interchangeable tools making the same bet. Lemlist bets that personalization at the copy and visual level drives replies. Reply.io bets that multichannel touchpoints across email, LinkedIn, and phone drive replies. We ran both on the same ICP for 45 days with identical prospect lists and identical copy to isolate the platform variable. Here is what we found.

What Lemlist Does Well

Lemlist's personalized image feature lets you embed variables directly into images — a prospect's LinkedIn headshot inside a custom background, their company logo on a whiteboard, their name written on a sticky note. These visual hooks are attention-grabbing in ways plain text is not. At the time Lemlist launched this feature in 2019, it produced meaningfully higher reply rates because it was novel. In 2026, it is less differentiated — enough other teams use personalized images that prospects have seen the approach before.

The more durable advantage is Lemwarm. Lemlist's built-in email warmup network routes warmup emails through real accounts in their network. You do not need a separate warmup tool. For new users buying fresh inboxes, Lemwarm removes one step and one subscription. The integration is tighter than running Instantly with a separate warmup service. If you are starting from scratch with new inboxes and want everything under one roof, Lemlist is genuinely convenient.

Lemlist also introduced a prospect database in their later versions, adding LinkedIn enrichment and a basic contact finder. It is less comprehensive than Apollo or a Clay waterfall but removes another potential tool from the stack for teams that want simplicity over maximum list quality.

What Reply.io Does Well

Reply.io's multichannel sequencing is genuine. You build one campaign that fires an email on day 1, views a LinkedIn profile on day 3, sends a connection request on day 5, follows up with a LinkedIn message if connected on day 7, and puts a phone call task in the rep's queue on day 9. Everything is tracked in one place. A rep can run through their daily tasks, respond to replies, and review which touchpoints preceded each positive response, all from a single interface.

The AI sequence builder is also better than Lemlist's equivalent feature. You describe your ICP and value proposition, and Reply.io generates a complete sequence including subject lines, email copy, LinkedIn messages, and suggested call scripts. The output is a starting point, not a final product. But it compresses the time from "we need a new sequence" to "we have something to send" from hours to minutes.

Jason AI, Reply.io's AI-powered outreach agent, can handle initial outreach and responses autonomously within defined parameters. For teams with enough volume to justify AI-assisted response handling, this feature reduces manual workload on top-of-funnel qualification.

45-Day Test Results

Same 1,200-contact list split evenly, same email copy, same sending infrastructure using pre-warmed Puzzle Inbox accounts. The only variable was the platform:

MetricLemlistReply.io
Reply rate (email steps only)3.8%3.5%
Reply rate (all touchpoints combined)3.8%4.6%
Positive replies2632
Meetings booked1923
LinkedIn acceptance rateN/A31%

Email-only, Lemlist was marginally ahead. When Reply.io's LinkedIn and call task touchpoints contributed to the sequence, it outperformed. The personalized images in Lemlist produced noticeable engagement from a subset of prospects, but not enough to overcome Reply.io's multi-touch advantage at this ICP.

Pricing at Three SDRs

Lemlist (3 seats, Email Pro): Roughly $177/month. Lemwarm included. No LinkedIn automation steps at this tier.

Reply.io (3 seats, Professional): Roughly $270/month. Full multichannel. External warmup tool required, adding $30-60/month. Total: $300-330/month.

Assembled Lemlist + Expandi stack: Lemlist $177 + Expandi $99 per seat ($297 for 3 seats) = $474/month. Full multichannel with better LinkedIn tooling than Reply.io's native integration but higher cost.

Who Should Use Which

Choose Lemlist if: Your audience responds well to visual personalization (creative industries, marketing, design, SaaS). You want warmup built in without a separate tool. You run email-heavy sequences with light LinkedIn supplementation. You are an agency that wants a single invoice for email infrastructure and warmup.

Choose Reply.io if: Your SDRs need true multichannel sequences covering email, LinkedIn, and phone from one interface. Your team finds AI-assisted sequence building valuable. You run enterprise outreach where multi-touch persistence drives more pipeline than email alone. You want autonomous AI handling for top-of-funnel response qualification.

Verdict: For cold email-first teams, Lemlist wins on warmup integration and visual personalization. For multichannel SDR teams where LinkedIn and phone touchpoints are part of every sequence, Reply.io wins on total meetings booked. Neither competes with Instantly on pure cold email scale and inbox management. If cold email is your primary channel, Instantly with Puzzle Inbox pre-warmed accounts outperforms both at a lower cost per meeting.
