Three inboxes per domain versus six inboxes per domain for cold email. I ran the split for 60 days and the deliverability difference was not subtle

I had always followed the three-inboxes-per-domain rule because people in communities like this one said so. But I had never actually tested whether it made a meaningful difference at my volume. So I set up a controlled test and ran it for 60 days.

Setup: 18 PuzzleInbox Google Workspace inboxes across 6 domains. Group A: 3 domains with 3 inboxes each. Group B: 3 domains with 6 inboxes each. Same ICP, same copy, same Smartlead campaigns. Both groups sending 15 cold emails per inbox per day.

Group A results (3 inboxes per domain): Reply rate: 4.1 percent. Average GlockApps inbox placement over 60 days: 91 percent. Zero blacklistings. Google Postmaster domain reputation: high throughout.

Group B results (6 inboxes per domain): Reply rate: 3.4 percent. Average GlockApps inbox placement: 83 percent. One domain had a brief blacklisting at day 38, cleared within 72 hours. Postmaster domain reputation dropped to medium for two of the three domains by day 45.

The gap was 0.7 percentage points in reply rate. That sounds small until you multiply it across thousands of emails. At my sending volume, 0.7 percentage points is roughly 20 fewer positive replies per month. And the reputation trend in Group B was concerning in a way the reply rate gap alone does not capture. Reputation declines compound. A medium Postmaster rating at day 45 becomes a problem at day 90 if you do not intervene.

Why does this happen? Google evaluates your domain as a whole, not individual inboxes. Six inboxes on one domain sends more total email from that domain. More email means more chances for a complaint, a bounce, or a spam trigger to accumulate. Three inboxes per domain limits the blast radius of any single problem.

The right structure at any scale is more domains, not more inboxes per domain. If you need higher volume, add domains and keep three inboxes on each. PuzzleInbox makes this straightforward because they handle domain setup and DNS for every new domain in the same timeframe.

I am not saying six inboxes per domain will destroy your deliverability immediately. It will not. But at the 60-day mark the erosion is real and measurable. Three inboxes per domain is not an arbitrary rule. It has a reason.
