The exact Clay workflow I use to write personalized first lines for 1000 contacts per week without touching individual records manually

Everyone talks about Clay like it requires a data engineering background to use. I built my first real workflow three months ago with zero coding experience and it took two afternoons. Here is exactly what it looks like.

My goal: first-line personalization for 1,000 contacts per week. Every first line specific to that contact. No generic openers. The kind of opener that makes a prospect stop and think the email was written for them alone.

Step 1: Import from Apollo. Pull your lead list with company name, title, LinkedIn URL, and website. That is all you need to start.

Step 2: Scrape the LinkedIn about section using Clay's built-in LinkedIn enrichment. Cost is minimal, roughly one credit per contact. The about section tells you how a person describes their own work in their own words.

Step 3: Pull recent company news using Clay's news enrichment. Filters for the last 90 days. If nothing comes back, I use the company website meta description as a fallback.

Step 4: Write an AI prompt in Clay that takes the LinkedIn about snippet and the company news snippet and generates a first line. My prompt is roughly: write a one-sentence opening that acknowledges [company news or about section point] and connects it naturally to a question about [our specific problem area]. Keep it under 20 words.

Step 5: Human review column. I scan 20 percent of AI-generated lines before they load into Instantly. Takes about 25 minutes per 1,000 contacts.

Result: first lines that read personal because they reference something real. Reply rates on campaigns using this workflow run about 1.5 percentage points higher than my non-personalized sequences. Total time per 1,000 contacts: about two hours including review. Clay credit cost for this workflow: roughly $30 per 1,000 contacts. Worth it at almost any sending volume.
