Honest review of Apollo.io after 12 months and 500K contacts pulled

I have been using Apollo.io Professional ($79/month) for 12 full months. My agency pulls data for 8 clients across SaaS, fintech, and professional services. Over that year I have exported over 500,000 contacts. This is my completely honest assessment.

What is great:

Database size and filters. 260M+ contacts is genuinely impressive for the price. The filters are the real value. I can target by company size, revenue, industry, tech stack, funding stage, job title, seniority, location, and more. Building a list of 500 prospects that match a specific ICP takes 10 to 15 minutes. On ZoomInfo, the same quality of filtering costs 5 to 10x more.

The free tier is real. 10,000 credits per month for free. That is enough for a solo SDR or early-stage founder to run cold email campaigns without spending anything on data. I started on the free tier and it genuinely works. No tricks, no paywalled features that make the free tier useless. You get real data.

Intent data on paid plans. Apollo added buyer intent signals that show which companies are actively researching topics related to your product. It is not as deep as Bombora or 6sense, but it is included in the price. I use it to prioritize accounts and it noticeably improves reply rates when I target high-intent companies first.

Chrome extension. Works on LinkedIn profiles and company websites. One click to pull email, phone, company data. My SDRs use it constantly for manual prospecting.

What is mediocre:

Email accuracy. Apollo claims high accuracy, and the verified emails are genuinely good. But I have measured it over 500K contacts, and the real-world accuracy is about 93%. That means 7 out of every 100 emails will bounce if you send without re-verifying. For cold email, a 7% bounce rate will damage your sender reputation fast. I run every Apollo export through ZeroBounce before loading into Instantly. After ZeroBounce filtering, bounce rates drop to under 1.5%. The extra verification step costs about $30 to $50 per month, but it is not optional.

Phone number accuracy. Mobile numbers outside the US are hit or miss. If your team cold calls European prospects, Apollo's phone data will disappoint you. For US mobiles, accuracy is decent but still below what Cognism offers with their phone-verified Diamond Data.

What is bad:

Sequence and sending features. Apollo has built-in email sequences, but they are basic. No inbox rotation across multiple accounts. No warmup. Limited A/B testing. If you are sending more than 100 emails per day, you will outgrow Apollo's sending features within a month. Use Instantly or Smartlead for sending and use Apollo purely for data. Trying to use Apollo as both your data tool and your sending platform will frustrate you.

Overall verdict: Apollo is the best value B2B data tool for cold email teams. The database, filters, and pricing are hard to beat. But treat it as a data source only. Pull your lists from Apollo, verify through ZeroBounce, and send through Instantly or Smartlead connected to pre-warmed PuzzleInbox inboxes. That stack gives you the best data at the best price with the best deliverability.
