Free Gmail vs Google Workspace for cold email sending: why using personal Gmail destroys your campaigns before they start

People ask whether they can just use their personal Gmail for cold email. The answer is no. Here is why, and what the actual cost difference looks like.
Free Gmail is not designed for cold sending. Personal Gmail accounts have hard sending limits. Google caps consumer accounts at 500 sends per day maximum. More critically, free Gmail does not let you set custom SPF, DKIM, or DMARC records on your own domain because you do not control the DNS. You are stuck sending from @gmail.com which looks like a personal account, not a business. Prospects see this immediately. Reply rates from @gmail.com addresses are the lowest I have tested across any sender configuration, by a significant margin.
What Google Workspace actually costs. Business Starter is $6 per inbox per month. A properly configured cold email setup with 3 inboxes per domain across 3 domains runs $54 per month on sending infrastructure alone. Add PuzzleInbox provisioning and warmup and you have a fully managed, properly authenticated setup for less than most SaaS tool subscriptions. The cost objection is not a real objection.
DNS control is the whole game. With Google Workspace on your own domain, you control SPF, DKIM, and DMARC completely. This authentication is what allows you to pass the checks that modern receiving servers require. An email without proper DKIM signing has a meaningfully lower chance of landing in primary inbox regardless of copy quality or list quality. Authentication is infrastructure, and infrastructure is the foundation everything else builds on.
The account suspension problem. Sending cold email from a personal Gmail account also violates Google's terms of service for consumer accounts. Your account gets suspended. I have watched this happen to founders three separate times this year. The cost of that suspension, lost warmup time, dead sequences, and client conversations you do not want to have, is far greater than the $6 per inbox it would have cost to set up Workspace correctly from day one.
Move off free Gmail. Six dollars per inbox. Worth every cent.
