Cold emails landing in Gmail promotions tab instead of primary inbox and here is what actually fixed it after three weeks of testing different changes

For three weeks my reply rates sat at 0.6 percent. My DNS was clean. Not on any blacklist. GlockApps showed my emails reaching the inbox on the spam test. I finally ran a placement test that segmented by folder and saw it: 70 percent of my emails were landing in the Promotions tab on Gmail addresses. The standard spam or inbox test does not differentiate between Primary and Promotions.
Here is what I changed and what actually moved the needle.
First change: stripped all HTML formatting. No bold text. No bullet points. Plain text only. Promotions tab classification is partly triggered by HTML formatting patterns that match marketing emails. This single change moved my Promotions landing rate from 70 percent to 48 percent.
Second change: removed the logo from my email signature. Images, even small ones, signal marketing email. Cut it entirely.
Third change: rewrote my first line from a generic opener to something specific to the recipient. The content of the email body matters in promotions classification because Gmail's algorithm reads the email, not just the headers. Vague generic openers match the promotional email pattern.
Fourth change: removed my company website URL from the signature. The link alone was not the problem. A URL pointing to a marketing website was the problem.
After all four changes combined: Promotions placement dropped to under 15 percent. Reply rate went from 0.6 percent to 3.1 percent in one week on the same list with the same PuzzleInbox inboxes.
The test tool I used: GlockApps for folder-level placement breakdown. It shows Primary, Promotions, and Spam separately for Gmail and Microsoft. Worth the $79 per month just for that data. Knowing which folder your emails land in tells you what to fix. Knowing only inbox-versus-spam tells you nothing about why your reply rate is 0.6 percent.
Plain text, no images, specific first lines, no marketing URLs in your signature. That is the fix for promotions tab placement in 2026.
