Apollo vs ZoomInfo vs Clay. Which data tool is actually worth the money?

Breaking down the three major B2B data tools for cold email lead generation.

Apollo: Best value. Free tier gives 10,000 email credits per month. Paid plans are reasonable. Email accuracy around 85%. Great filtering. Built-in sequencing. My go-to recommendation for most cold email senders.

ZoomInfo: Enterprise grade data. Most accurate and comprehensive B2B database. But pricing starts at $15K+ per year. Only worth it if you are doing very high volume enterprise outbound. Overkill for SMB or agency work.

Clay: Best for waterfall enrichment — pulls data from 50+ sources and finds the best match. Amazing for complex ICP targeting. But $149/month minimum and data credits add up fast. Best for teams who need every possible data point about a prospect.

My recommendation: Start with Apollo free tier. Move to Apollo paid when you need more credits. Only consider Clay if you need multi-source enrichment. ZoomInfo only if you have enterprise budget and enterprise targets.

we rotate every 3-4 months as a general rule. if you're sending at safe volumes (15-20 per inbox/day) and your deliverability is good, you can stretch it to 6 months. but if you see reply rates dropping below 2%, it's time to retire that domain immediately

key is to always have new domains in the pipeline. buy and start warming replacements 2-3 weeks before you plan to retire old ones. you never want to be in a position where all your domains die at once and you have nothing ready

at 3 inboxes per domain, rotating domains means rotating 3 inboxes at once. plan your batches accordingly. and always always use separate domains — never your primary business domain for cold email. your main domain should be untouchable
