Why do some prospects reply like I personally insulted their family

frustratedfrank · 2026-03-04 · 2,180 views

Got a reply today: "I will report your company to every authority I can find and make sure you never send another email again." I sent ONE email about project management software.

This happens to every cold emailer. Some people just hate receiving cold emails. Here is how I handle it:

1. Immediately unsubscribe them. Do not respond. Do not argue. Just remove them from all lists permanently.

2. Do not take it personally. They are not mad at you specifically. They are mad at the 50 other cold emails they got this week.

3. Check your targeting. If you are getting a lot of angry replies, your ICP might be wrong. Some personas (developers, academics) tend to react more negatively to cold outreach.

4. Keep your spam complaint rate under 0.3%. A few angry people will not hurt you. But if too many people mark you as spam, Google will punish your sending reputation.

For every angry reply, there are 10 people who just ignore your email and 2-3 who are genuinely interested. Focus on the interested ones.

my personal favorite was "unsubscribe me from life." like ok buddy it was one email about project management

the angry replies used to bother me so much in my first month. now I just laugh and hit unsubscribe. you develop thick skin fast in this game

the 0.3% spam complaint rate is the real actionable takeaway here. check this in Google Postmaster Tools. if you're above 0.3% you need to fix your targeting or copy ASAP

targeting developers and CTOs is genuinely painful. they HATE cold email with a passion. I stick to VP Sales, RevOps, marketing leaders. much warmer reception

hot take: if you're getting zero angry replies, you're not sending enough volume. it's a numbers game. even the best targeted campaigns get some haters

I screenshot the funniest angry replies and share them with my team on Slack. we have a whole channel for it. keeps morale up honestly

protip: if someone replies angrily, NEVER respond. just unsubscribe and move on. I've seen reps try to apologize or explain and it always makes things worse

the fact that this thread exists shows how common it is. solidarity with all you cold emailers catching hate for doing your jobs lol

markw_cold · 2026-03-08

real question though — do angry replies hurt your sender reputation? like if someone marks you as spam after replying angrily?

frustratedfrank · 2026-03-08

@markw_cold the reply itself doesn't hurt you. but if they hit the spam button AFTER replying, that does count against your domain reputation. which is why you immediately remove them — so you never email them again
