Cold email bounce rate way too high. How do I fix this?

Running campaigns for a new client and bounce rate is sitting at 8% across 10 inboxes. Anything above 3% is dangerous territory so I need to fix this fast before it tanks my domain reputation.
What I have tried so far:
- Verified all emails through Apollo before uploading
- Ran them through NeverBounce as a second check
- Removed all catch-all domains
Still bouncing at 8%. After digging deeper I found the issue: my client's ICP is targeting small businesses with 5-15 employees. These companies have high employee turnover and their email addresses go stale fast. Apollo data was showing verified but the addresses had churned since verification.
What actually fixed it:
- Switched to MillionVerifier for a third verification layer — caught another 12% of bad emails that NeverBounce missed
- Excluded all addresses older than 90 days in Apollo
- Added a catch-all filter at the sending platform level
- Reduced batch sizes to 50 emails per day per inbox so bounces have less impact on reputation
Bounce rate dropped to 1.4% after these changes. Lesson learned: double or even triple verify when targeting SMB prospects. Their data decays much faster than enterprise contacts.

8% bounce rate is a five alarm fire. Good catch on the SMB data decay issue. This is exactly why I tell everyone to triple-verify when targeting companies under 50 employees. Employee turnover at small companies is brutal and email addresses go stale within weeks sometimes. MillionVerifier is a good add — it catches things NeverBounce misses on catch-all domains.

the 90-day age filter on Apollo data is smart. we track data freshness as a metric now. anything over 60 days gets re-verified before sending. it adds cost but keeping bounces under 2% is non-negotiable

wait so NeverBounce alone isn't enough? I've been relying solely on it and my bounces are hovering around 3.5%. maybe I need to stack verifiers too

@frustratedfrank No single verifier catches everything. NeverBounce + MillionVerifier together gives you the best coverage. Also make sure you are filtering out catch-all domains -- those are the biggest source of hidden bounces because verifiers can not confirm individual addresses on catch-all servers.
